You’re kicking back and enjoying a bit of gambling at the end of a long day when it strikes you as to what would make the moment perfect; a nice, cool drink. You stand and look over at your alcohol cabinet, which is absolutely mouth-watering, and then reality hits you; you’re on a diet. With your heart sinking and deep sadness embracing you, you sit back down, feeling a bit sad about the no-go drinking situation.
However, the situation isn’t all doom and gloom – you realise that you need not play at an online casino with hand void of hard liquor. It turns out, there are many alcoholic drinks that aren’t as bad for your diet as you might assume. There are some beverages that, against all expectations, are actually rather diet-friendly.
Take a look at our quick list of alcoholic beverages that are the best companions for those on a diet.
Keep It Simple, Stupid
For those who are not familiar with the acronym KISS, you’re about to get very familiar with it. It stands for, as the heading says, keep it simple, stupid. What does this mean, you’re asking? This stand for that very simply, the first rule of drinking alcohol and staying thin is that the sugar is generally not in the booze itself, but rather the mixer that goes with it.
If you’re ordering a whiskey or a brandy, then it is best start learning to love it neat. The tonic that goes with it is loaded with sugar, and that’s where you’ll be doing yourself a disservice. You’ve probably already guessed this, but don’t even think about having a Coke with anything, as it is generally bad news when you’re trying to cut back on sugar. In general, stick to a lime, lemon, sugar-free tonic water, or something else that has a low calorie count, and doesn’t come out of a can.
The Best and Worst Drinks
Here is an easier to understand way of putting it. A shot of vodka, neat, has zero carbs and zero sugars. All you’ll be suffering is around 97 calories for drinking the colourless liquid. Toss it back with a slice of lemon and you’re basically having the cleanest drink possible. Right?
Want another example? Sure. A shot of rum has the exact same calorie count as a shot of Vodka, which is 97 calories. If you’re desperate to have it with something, then a Diet Coke is your best bet. Throw rum into a Pina Colada, on the other hand, and the calorie count rockets up to 245 with all the added extras. Breaking this number down, there are 32 grams of carbs added, and a grand total of 21 grams of sugar. See what we’re saying about cutting out these unnecessary sugars?
But maybe you prefer your drinks by the way of a glass or two of your favourite whiskey. A whiskey shot will cost you 105 calories, and a rather insignificant 0.03 grams of carbs, and equally negligible 0.03 grams of sugar. For those with a bit of a sweet tooth, you might consider a Manhattan if you don’t want it neat, which adds sweet vermouth and bitters. Want to know what you don’t want? Whiskey sours. That would send you into a diet-destroying world of sadness, with 240 calories, a dismal 24 grams of carbs, and a waist-expanding 23 grams of sugars.
One last drink to look at, which is a crowd favourite, gin. A neat shot is a sensible 110 calories. A gin Martini is still under 200 calories, with not a gram of sugar or carbs to be found. However, throw in a tonic and, as you’ve probably already guessed, the carbs fly into the stratosphere with an extra 21 grams that you didn’t need.
So as a last thought, and one that you should be taking to heart; if you want to drink and slim down, KISS!
